Background
Dammar is extracted from the Canarium strictum tree, belonging to the Burseraceae family (sometimes called the Copal family), which Palo Santo (Bursera graveolens), Kopal (eg Dacryodes peruviana & Copaifera officinalis), Frankincense (Boswellia serrata) and Myrrh (Commiphora myrrha) also belongs to. These large canopy trees with bipinnate leaves are distributed across parts of India, Myanmar, and Yunnan province, China. It can grow up to about 40 meters tall and is found in moist deciduous to semi-evergreen forests at altitudes ranging from about 750 to 1400 meters.
The tree, Canarium strictum secretes a resin called "Sambrani" or "Dammar" which is used in medicine as well as commercially. Its use among tribal people for medical purposes in different parts of India has been investigated through ethnobotanical studies. It is also used in the Siddha system for medicine. In addition, Dammar is used in incense and in paint industries. It is used in food as either a clouding or a glazing agent. Dammar was first introduced as a picture varnish in 1826 and is commonly referred to as Dammar varnish.
Black dammar resin contains junenol, canarone and epikhusinal. The plant contains a sesquiterpene keton: canarone.

Dammar is mild, light, sweet and fruity. The scent reminds of the Indonesian Copal (Dacryodes peruviana), which raises the mood and sharpen the mind.
Usage & magical properties
Dammar is used in folk medicine to cure various bronchial diseases. The resin is given orally to cure rheumatism, fever, cough, asthma, epilepsy, various chronic skin diseases, syphilis and hernia and also helps improve complexion.
Dammar, which means "the light" is often burned to combat mourning, depression and melancholy. It is said to help with clairvoyance, contact with angels and deities from the higher spheres, raises the mood, purifies and heals, gives strength and raises the consciousness.
